Govt to enforce 5-year rule for admissions

From the coming academic year, only those children who have completed five years as on May 31, will be admitted to Class 1. Even a shortfall of one day would prevent the child from entering standard 1, said primary and secondary education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri.

He said that the law would be enforced strictly to avoid complications in higher education and in seeking jobs.

“A circular has already been issued to all government, aided, unaided and private schools in this regard. If this is adhered to strictly, then no student will appear for the SSLC before completing 15 years of age,” Kageri said.

The issue came under serious consideration after more than 17,000 students who passed out of the SSLC this year had not yet completed 15 years. “This problem will continue for about the next ten years. Hence, students who have already been admitted will be permitted to appear for the SSLC,” Kageri clarified. Read More>>

Burkha ban: notice issued to college

Your Education is Our World

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada V. Ponnuraj on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to the management of SVS College, Bantwal, for banning students from wearing burkha on the campus.

Mr. Ponnuraj has also written to the Principal Secretary, Department of Collegiate Education, recommending punitive action against the college for imposing an “unconstitutional” ban. “This issue can have ramifications on the fragile relations between different communities here,” he told presspersons.

He expressed hope that the Department of Collegiate Education and the State Government would take up the cause of ensuring the basic rights of an individual as enshrined in the Constitution.

Mr. Ponnuraj’s action follows a complaint he received on Wednesday from Aysha Ashmin (18), a first year B.Com student of SVS College who has been suspended for wearing a headscarf.

Do not close schools not using Kannada as medium of instruction: SC to Karnataka

Your Education is Our World

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the Karnataka government should not force Kannada as the medium of instruction in primary classes and directed it not to close any private school which decided to go against the state policy by imparting education through English medium.

Refusing to stay last year’s high court judgment allowing private schools to choose the medium of instruction, a Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan said: “The government shall not pass any closure orders against unrecognised schools.”

It, however, gave relief to the state, which is yet to implement the HC order, by staying the contempt proceedings initiated by the HC against the chief secretary and officials of the education department.
