Some students attend coaching to get into instititions such as Morarji Desai Residential School, Navodaya Residential Model School and Karnataka Sainik School. These government schools provide education for free and students from poor families want to study there after taking coaching classes. Why? They have to pass an entrance test to get into these conventional schools.

At a visit to Gulbarga recently, Child Commission members noticed that attendance records were full although no children were present. Then the teachers revealed that students enrolling for coaching to get into free government residential schools are given attendance even if they don’t come to class regularly. This is because if more students from a certain school clear the entrance exam, the school’s standing and prestige get better.
